The Falklands/Las Malvinas, December 3, 2005

The 1982 war between Great Britain and Argentina over these isolated, icy islands is still making news. This article points out some stunning details remembered by the then French president Francois Mitterrand’s physician. It seems that Margaret Thatcher demanded the secret codes of Argentinean Exocet missiles (of French origin) after two battleships went sunken or, she warned, she’d go for the “nuclear option” over the main Argentinean cities. Mitterrand handed the codes to her and doing this, he blocked the weapons previously sold.
I agree with the writer when he underlines the moral that (in spite of the Junta’s nonsense decision to assault on the islands) you can’t rely on others technology to do strategic choices. Even regarding civil industry matters. On the other hand even developed, mature societies can fall for autocratic, flamboyant leaders; as the cases of Thatcher and Bush proves.
I added the star of local rock Charly García to the illustration because he had done then a touching song requesting “do not bombard Buenos Aires”. An artistic exaggeration that now turned out to have been more realistic than anybody imagined.

La guerra de 1982 entre Gran Bretaña y Argentina por estas desoladas y gélidas islas todavía produce noticias. Este artículo señala algunos detalles alucinantes recordados por el médico del entonces presidente francés Francois Mitterrand. Al parecer Margaret Thatcher le exigió la entrega de los códigos secretos de los misiles Exocet argentinos (de origen francés) luego de que dos naves de guerra fueron hundidas; de otro modo -advirtió- usaría la “opción nuclear” sobre las principales ciudades argentinas. Mitterrand le entregó los códigos, bloqueando así las armas ya vendidas.
Estoy de acuerdo con el escritor cuando subraya la moraleja de que (más allá de la decisión sin sentido tomada por la Junta al invadir las islas) no se puede confiar en tecnología ajena para hacer decisiones estratégicas. Incluso en asuntos concernientes a la industria civil. Por otra parte, incluso sociedades desarrolladas y maduras pueden caer en manos de gobernantes autocráticos y extravagantes como demuestran los casos de Thatcher y Bush.
Agregué a la estrella de rock local Charly García a la ilustración porque él había hecho por entonces una conmovedora canción rogando que “no bombardeen Buenos Aires”. Una exageración artística que ahora resulta haber sido más realista de lo que nadie imaginó.
